About
Daxson Lewis is a respected bluegrass musician, educator, and multi-instrumentalist known for his distinct touch on the five-string banjo. As the director of the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University, he is dedicated to shaping the next generation of musicians while maintaining an active touring career with The McLain Family Band and The David Parmley Band.
From an early age, Daxson was captivated by the driving sounds of bluegrass legends like Ricky Skaggs, Doyle Lawson, and The Country Gentlemen. His passion for the banjo quickly took root, and at just 15 years old, he was awarded the Brian Friesen Award from the Deering Banjo Company, earning him a performance on the Grand Ole Opry stage with The Riders In The Sky. His playing, deeply influenced by artists like Earl Scruggs, Raymond McLain, J.D. Crowe, Jim Mills, Tony Trischka, and Sonny Osborne, has since become a signature blend of tradition and innovation. In 2024, he was honored with induction into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame as a member of The McLain Family Band, a recognition of his contributions to the genre.
An accomplished international performer, Daxson has taken bluegrass music to audiences in The People's Republic of China, Denmark, Ireland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Canada. Over the years, he has performed alongside some of the genre’s most respected artists, including Dailey & Vincent, The Price Sisters, Jeff Parker & Company, and others. In addition to his work in bluegrass, Daxson has been a featured soloist with symphony orchestras, blending the traditions of Appalachian music with the richness of orchestral arrangements.
Beyond the stage, Daxson is committed to preserving and advancing traditional music through education. His work at Morehead State University allows him to share his real-world experience as a touring musician, booking agent, and recording artist with aspiring artists. Currently, he is preparing for the release of his solo project, marking an exciting new chapter in his career.
